The Rangers were five minutes away from winning their first game of the season. It ended with a difficult loss as a result of a costly penalty.
Jack Johnson scored a powerplay goal with 52 seconds remaining in overtime, and the Los Angeles Kings beat the Rangers 3-2. Ryan McDonagh was whistled for a tripping penalty with 2:09 left in OT, and the Kings took advantage.
Henrik Lundqvist finished with 27 saves, including many sparkling ones in the 1st period, when the Kings outshot the Rangers 13-4. The Rangers were fortunate to end the period tied at 1, as captain Ryan Callahan scored on a shot from the side of the net.
After a scoreless 2nd period, the Rangers took the lead halfway through the 3rd period, as Marian Gaborik buried a second chance opportunity past a scrambling Jonathan Quick. The game remained that way until 4:59 left in the period, when Mike Richards deflected a Brad Richardson pass over Lundqvist's blocker.
The Rangers next game in tomorrow at 1 against the Anaheim Ducks.
